“Is that a Pit Bull?”
“Yes, and his name is OREO”.
Oreo is a 6 year old Pit Bull/Terrier Husky mix.
I rescued him from the Humane Society in Atlanta back in 2021.
When I first met Oreo, he had been at the shelter for over a year.
He had been brought back from what everyone thought would be a forever home situation four separate times.
He was completely without spirit. The light had left his eyes and he would not even look up when anyone walked by his cage.
I needed to know why he was brought back? Such a beautiful dog had to have a story……
I went into his cage and just sat next to him. He ran to the opposite side; I just waited.
And waited.
And waited.
I remember saying to him “if you come closer, I have been told I give an awesome belly rub”
He got up and sat on top of me.
That was it for me; He was coming home with me.
The director of the shelter shared his back story: Oreo had come from an abusive situation as a bait dog in a pit bull dog fighting ring; he is “aggressive”. And he tested positive for heart worm and we can’t find anyone who wants to adopt a sick dog.
When I met him, he had all the signs of post traumatic stress disorder.
He would not look you in the eyes; cower in the corner of his cell; jump at any loud sound;
You can tell that the constant barking of the other dogs was also giving him anxiety;
He would just pace back and forth in his cage.
He could not walk on a leash; would attack any dog that he saw in the common areas; he would not eat or drink for days and he did not want to play with his adopters.
I had heard enough. He came home with me on April 18, 2021 and began heart worm treatment in June of that same year.
Oreo is thriving traveling all over the National Parks being the “spokes puppy” for heart worm vaccination treatment. With training, extra helpings of love and a commitment to this Canine, Oreo is living is best life with four other dogs that are his dog pack.
